Your car could be getting secretly damaged by the adverse weather conditions being experienced in the UK over the past few weeks
Due to the bad weather salt and grit will have been scattered across the roads to help defrost them and offer drivers more grip.
While this is important as it can drastically improve the safety of the car it can have one negative effect.
Salt and grit could, however, be secretly damaging your car.
Firstly, paintwork can chip as a result of grit being flicked up against the vehicle’s exterior.
If the salt seeps into these cracks or chips then it could potentially turbocharge corrosion and rust, which could be expensive to repair.
Similarly, salt can also cause corrosion to a vehicle’s alloy wheels which could also be costly to repair or replace.
There are also a lot of exposed and expensive parts under the car including the brake systems, exhaust, and others, which could be costly to repair if they get rusted by the salt.
The salt water on the road could catalyse the wear of these parts which is why it’s important to keep your vehicle clean.
Adam Chaplin, Car Maintenance Expert at Halfords told Express.co.uk a number of ways drivers can help combat any potential damage caused by salt and grit
He said: “While salt and grit are important tools to keep our roads safe during the winter, they can also cause significant damage to your car’s paintwork, which is your main protection against rust on your car’s bodywork.
“To help prevent this, it’s worth giving your car a regular wash underneath, especially around wheels arches as well as waxing your car regularly to help give the paintwork extra protection.
“It can also be a good idea to have your car checked over by an expert after a particularly cold winter when there has been salt spread on the roads often, just to make sure there’s not any unseen damage that could cost you much more to fix down the line.”
