A woman has been dramatically arrested yards from Buckingham Palace after running towards the royal grounds “screaming” with three large knives.
The suspect, who appeared to be in her 20s or 30s, triggered a significant police response after she was spotted brandishing a blade in Victoria Street at 9.40am, Scotland Yard said.
Wearing an army-style camouflage hat, the woman ran north towards the area of St James’s Park, where she appeared to throw her knives into the gardens of Wellington Barracks.
Mounted police officers were seen galloping along Birdcage Walk to arrest the suspect, who was also wearing a pink t-shirt and shorts.
She began hysterically laughing as a group of officers handcuffed her next to the railings next to the barracks, along the route famed for the Changing of the Guard ceremony.
