VIEWERS of Channel 4’s Naked Beach were left in tears on Thursday as they watched a woman with rock bottom body confidence strip off on national TV.
Midwife Jolie, 29, from Derby, appeared on the Channel 4 programme which sees insecure Brits jet out to Greece to spend time with body-confident naked people.
Before jetting out to the villa, Jodie admitted that her confidence has taken a knock as the skin condition vitiligo – which causes large pale white patches to develop all over the body – has become progressively worse in recent years.
The mum-of-two admitted that she hadn’t even been confident enough to wear a swimming costume since being diagnosed with the condition.
But viewers were left in floods of tears as, after just one week in the Naked Beach villa, Jolie striped off in front of someone else for the first time since developing vitiligo.
Taking to Twitter viewers shared their emotional reaction with one writing: “Oh my God well done @Channel4 for sharing such an inspirational bunch of human beings!
“My body confidence is now through the roof and I’m crying happy tears for Jolie.”
Another agreed adding: “#NakedBeach is such a brilliant concept but I had no idea it would make me cry so much.”
“I’m crying at #NakedBeach!!” wrote a third.
And one mum admitted that she was even watching it with her child, tweeting: “Watching #nakedbeach with my almost 10 yo daughter because I want her to live life to the fullest and not feel like she isn’t good enough!”
During her time in the villa, Jolie – and fellow contestants David and Danielle – had to look at themselves naked in the mirror for 20 minutes each night while also participating in individual tasks that push them out of their comfort zone.
But it is Jolie who struggles most with the tasks breaking down when she their naked hosts ask her to push her hair back for a photo.
Determined that this will finally be the year where she learns to “embrace myself”, Jolie is assessed by experts who give her a 4 out of 10 on a scale of body dysmorphia.
The overall aim of the show – which has been dubbed as the antidote to Love Island – is to see whether spending time with people with a variety of body shapes helps these contestants to love themselves.
At the end of their stay, the contestants are asked to strip off and cover themselves in paint just like their hosts (including plus-size model Felicity Hayward) as they learn to embrace their bodies.
As her time in the villa progresses Jolie is eventually encouraged to wear a swimsuit by her host and mentor Ayesha Perry-Iqbal.
In one of their final tasks the contestants were asked to step out on camera in nothing but body paint, something that all three succeeded in doing.
But it was Jolie who made the boldest move, deliberately choosing a pattern that highlighted her skin condition.
WHAT IS VITILIGO?
Vitiligo is a long-term condition where white patches develop on the skin.
It’s caused by melanin, a pigment, and most commonly occurs on the face, neck, hands and skin creases.
It can develop at any age and starts as a pale patch of skin which gradually turns completely white. These patches are usually permanent.
Vitiligo can lead to other complications, like sunburn on the white patches, while it can be associated with eye inflammation and partial loss of hearing.
It’s not clear why certain people develop vitiligo, but there are some risk factors:
- Family history of vitiligo
- Family history of autoimmune conditions
- Melanoma (skin cancer) or cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (cancer of the lymphatic system)
- Skin damage from sunburn
- Exposure to chemicals
She said: “I was really scared, I had butterflies but I embraced it, and I chose to map out my vitiligo.”
And at the final reveal, which saw the contestants strip off completely, Jolie had no qualms when it came to bearing all.
She said of her condition: “It’s part of my body now it’s not a separate thing, and if another vitiligo wants to pop in bring it on.
