Type 2 diabetes can trigger symptoms such as needing to pee more than usual, feeling thirsty all the time, feeling very tired, and blurred vision. Left untreated, it can lead to long-term complications with the eyes, nerves, kidneys, feet and heart. So what can you do to prevent the condition and keep your blood sugar levels in check? While eating a diet high in sugar, fat and salt can increase the risk of the condition developing, other foods can help bring high blood sugar down.
Eating a wide range of foods, including fruit, vegetables and some starchy foods like pasta, is recommended by the NHS. As is keeping sugar, fat and salt to a minimum.
But certain food and drink in particular have been found to have blood sugar lowering qualities.
A study carried out in 2012 found drinking coffee may help lower the risk of type 2 diabetes.
The researchers found the level of risk dropped even lower for people who drank two to three cups per day.
Even drinking four cups of coffee a day was shown to keep high blood sugar at bay.
The results showed true for both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffees.
But the experts advised it’s important to make sure coffee remains unsweetened.
Adding milk, cream or sugar into your brew can increase the calorie count and may affect your blood sugar levels.
But it should be noted exceeding four cups of coffee a day may increase your blood pressure.
The NHS warns: “If you’re a big fan of coffee, tea or other caffeine-rich drinks, such as cola and some energy drinks, consider cutting down.
It’s fine to drink tea and coffee as part of a balanced diet, but it’s important that these drinks are not your main or only source of fluid.”
One food which has proven effective at lowering blood sugar is black beans.
Being a complex carbohydrate, studies have shown the body digests black beans slower than it does other carbohydrates, helping people manage their blood sugar levels.
Eating black beans can also help with weight loss and help regulate cholesterol, which are beneficial for someone with diabetes.
But it isn’t just black beans that can provide these benefits. Other beans also hold these qualities, such as kidney beans, pinto beans and adzuki beans.
If you’re using canned beans, you should consider an option with no added salt.
