Trump promises ‘very important’ vaping move, age limit change

President Trump said Friday that the White House would soon issue a “very important” proposal on vaping that would include an age limit and a possible ban on flavored products.

“We’re going the be coming out with a very important position on vaping. We have to take care of our kids, most importantly. So we’re going to have an age limit of 21 or so, but we’ll be coming out with something next week, very important on vaping,” Trump said before boarding Marine One for the first leg of a trip to Georgia for a fundraiser and other events.

The president said that while safety was crucial, the administration was also looking at what effect its policy would have on the industry and people’s jobs.

“We’re talking about the age, we’re talking about flavors, we’re talking about keeping people working and, you know, there are some pretty good aspects. But we’re very close to a final report, and we will be giving it next week,” he said.

“We have a lot of people to look at, including jobs, frankly, because it’s become a pretty big industry. But we’re going to take care of that. When you mention vaping, you’re talking about e-cigarettes, a lot of different things, but we’re coming out with a big paper next week.”

Some state and local governments have already raised the smoking age from 18 to to 21.

There is also pending legislation in Congress, where the issue has rare bipartisan support.

Team Trump said in September that the administration was readying a ban on flavored e-cigarettes, a move opposed by vaping advocates who argue that removing flavors would force vape shops around the country to close, and that fewer people would use the devices to stop smoking.
