Fans that feel the need, the need for speed were astonished when the long-awaiting Top Gun Maverick trailer was dropped during San Diego Comic Con. The first trailer for the highly anticipated sequel was released yesterday, teasing Tom Cruise’s return to the cult fan film as a hotshot fighter pilot. Fans around the world were ecstatic to see the trailer and reminisced about their favourite moments of the original 1986 film which established Tom Cruise as an international star. But how can you watch the Top Gun Maverick trailer and when is the new film out?
American actor Tom Cruise is set to reprise his role as an expert fighter pilot in the upcoming Top Gun 2 film, alongside Miles Teller and Val Kilmer.
The 57-year-old actor made his name in his roles in the comedy Risky Business in 1983, aged 21, and action drama Top Gun, aged 24.
He will be returning to the big screen as cocky pilot Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell for the film, which will be set 34 years after the original.
The star was met with a roar of applause when he revealed the exhilarating trailer and reminisced about the original Top Gun.
At San Diego Comic Con Mr Cruise said: “I was always asked “When are you going to do another one?”
“Well, you’ve been very patient with me. I felt like it was my responsibility to really deliver for you.”
In the new film, Maverick is a flight instructor at the Top Gun school and guides the son of Goose, from the original, to follow in his father’s footsteps and become the pilot his father was.
Cast of the new film includes: Miles Teller as Nick ‘Goose’ Bradshaw’s son and pilot trainee Bradley Bradshaw and Val Kilmer as Thomas “Iceman” Kazansky.

The trailer, which can be seen here, shows Ed Harris’s character, a high-ranking military official, calling Maverick a “dinosaur” in the modern world of aviation.
It opens with a dramatic shot of what appears to be a desert, with a mountainous background.
Within the trailer, shocks of Maverick flying are shown alongside nostalgic shots of the hotshot pilot wearing his iconic leather jacket teamed with a pair of aviators.
Various scenes and characters from the film are shown in a montage as Tom Cruise’s character refuses to admit defeat and retire, despite others saying his “kind is headed for extinction”.
Tom Cruise shared the trailer on Twitter alongside which he wrote: “Maverick is back. #TopGun.”
The video now has more than eight million views.
During the San Diego Comic Con, Mr Cruise revealed all the flying in the trailer was in fact real and said that the second Top Gun film is a love letter to aviation.
The Top Gun: Maverick film is currently in production and is set to be released in June 2020.
