The Good Place: Tahani star opens up on moment that left her sobbing ‘uncontrollably’

Many viewers were distraught when it was announced The Good Place would come to an end after just four seasons. Thankfully, the final episode delivered a fitting ending to the series when it was released on NBC and Netflix, and the bittersweet farewell to the show’s beloved characters remains one of the most touching TV moments of this year.

In the hour long special episode at the end of The Good Place’s fourth season, Whenever You’re Ready, architect Michael (played by Ted Danson) and the plucky gang of dead humans constructed the ideal afterlife.

After enduring what felt like an eternity trying to secure a spot in the titular Good Place, Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell), Chidi Anagonye (William Jackson Harper) and co. finally said their last goodbyes.

Fans were saddened to see the beloved series come to an end after just a few short-lived seasons on NBC and Netflix made the fantasy comedy an international hit.

Thanks to the ingenious script from showrunner Michael Schur, however, each and every character was given their own satisfying conclusion.

Over the course of the series, no one in the cast has changed quite so much as wealthy socialite Tahani Al-Jamil (Jameela Jamil).

Evolving from Eleanor’s sworn enemy to her most trusted friend, the finale saw Tahani reconcile with her distant family and embark on a new, fulfilling career in the afterlife.

In one of the episode’s most touching scenes, Tahani expresses her wish to become an architect like Michael.

The reformed demon grants her wish by choosing to spend some time on Earth as a human, and even presents Tahani with one of his signature bowties, recognising her as Michael’s successor.

In Tahani’s scenes, fans discovered her parents frequently neglected her in favour of her sister’s artistic talents, despite Kamilah’s self-centredness.

When the family reunite in the afterlife, her parents and sister finally apologise for treating Tahani so poorly, and the Al-Jamils spend eternity making up for lost time.

If fans found Tahani’s family reunion emotional, it was nothing compared to Jameela Jamil’s reaction to her character’s last moments.

Speaking to Deadline, she admitted: “Everything that was fantastic about her, and annoying, can be traced back to that family.”

“So to be able to see that she had worked through all of her s**t, and then finally able to resolve it and find that love and acceptance and admiration from her family meant so much.

“I cried, I just wept. I sobbed so uncontrollably that I don’t think I’ve ever cried that much. Mike changed my life.”

Despite ending too soon, creator Michael Schur wrapped up The Good Place on an impossibly high note that will undoubtedly go down as one of the best episodes in the show’s history.

The Good Place is available to stream on Netflix.
