Cops said the environmental science student had been hiking with a group of classmates from Briar Cliff University when the accident occurred.

Newton County Sheriff Glenn Wheeler said several people have died from falls there in recent years.

Andrea studied Environment Science at Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa, and was a member of the school’s volleyball team and choir.

A spokesman for the university said: “Andrea was a passionate environmental science major, exemplary student and dedicated athlete.

“She lived BCU’s values in everything she did from the classroom to the court and everywhere she went.

“Andrea made a tremendous impact on the BCU community and everyone she met and will be greatly missed.”

She was raised in Hot Springs, South Dakota, by parents Mark and Tamara, and had a younger brother called Matt.

Her death comes just days after Sydney Paige Monfries, 22, died after falling from a university bell tower she had climbed to take photos for Instagram.

It’s believed the senior, of Portland, Oregon, was taking part in the stunt as a dangerous rite of passage for students who are set to graduate from the elite school.

But journalism student Sydney suffered fatal injuries after slipping on her way up to the top of the Keating Hall clock tower.
