SICK patients discharged from hospital too early last year got £20million in compensation from NHS chiefs.
They paid out an average of nearly £200,000 each to 104 victims sent home in 2017/18.

Compo payouts for the past five years have seen £47million handed to more than 400 people who needed to be readmitted for further treatment.
It comes as figures show 71,000 patients were back in hospital last year just 24 hours after they were sent home.
Doctors also had to treat 484,609 folk taken to A&E within four weeks of being discharged.
Nicola Wainwright, a clinical negligence specialist at law firm Leigh Day, said: “Sometimes it seems the NHS takes a short-term view to get a patient out of hospital rather than a ‘better safe than sorry’ approach we might expect.

“This could avoid the patient serious injury and the NHS money caring for that much sicker patient in the long run.”
Shadow health secretary Jonathan Ashworth said: “Years of austerity has seen the pressures on our frontline NHS go through the roof, with emergency readmission’s rising, leaving patients’ safety at risk and costing more for taxpayers.

An NHS Improvement spokesman said: “NHS staff always aim to make sure patients go home when it is best and safest for them to do so.
“The Long Term Plan sets out how the NHS, working with social care, will help people get home when they are ready to leave hospital with more support for them in the community.”
