KING POWER RACING had reason to celebrate as Cleonte (7-2) gave them their first winner of the week – in the last race of the meeting.

Silvestre De Sousa rode a cracker on the six-year-old, who had enough in reserve to see off the challenge of last year’s winner Pallasator (10-1).

Steady fractions were set by jumpers Black Corton and Younevercall, but in the end it was the Flat-breds who had the upper hand.

As the field rounded the home turn, Frankie Dettori, looking for his eighth winner of the week, made a fast-forward move on board Corelli, as Max Dynamite (100-30f) and Cleonte waited in the wings.

However, as quick as Corelli’s move was, so he went backwards, and it was left to Silvestre De Sousa and Cleonte to power into the lead with a furlong to go.

Last year’s winner Pallasator came from the clouds to lay down the biggest challenge, but Andrew Balding’s gelding bravely stuck his neck out in the final hundred yards.

Gordon Elliott’s raider stuck on for second, with Max Dynamite back in third.

The success was a poignant one for connections, who were stunned by the death of King Power boss Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha in October last year.

Winning rider Silvestre De Sousa said: “It means a lot to me.

“The horses have all run well this week but we’ve been a bit unlucky.

“I’m delighted for the family and for King Power Racing.”
