YORK hosted a brilliant card on Thursday. The sun was shining, and the racing on the track lived up to expectations.

There was plenty going on though, and we’ve picked out some bits you may have missed across the afternoon.

York Day 1 report review

Taking debut 👀

Repartee – 4.35 York

Whoooooosh. Kevin Ryan’s two-year-old looked a bit special in winning first time out here.

Andrea Atzeni looked super confident throughout and pushed the colt clear for a five-length victory in a hot-looking race.

He is related to Kingman and he will surely make his presence felt at Royal Ascot in the Coventry Stakes.

One for the tracker 🔭

Sun Maiden – 2.25  York

This beautifully-bred filly was a shade disappointing last season.

But she really caught the eye on her return in this Group 2 Middleton Stakes, improving stylishly on the bridle to challenge.

She got a bit tired in the closing stages and weakened into third, but she looks sure to win a big one this term.

A horse to take on next time ⚔

Soldier’s Call – 4.05 York

Archie Watson’s speedster had a cracking two-year-old season and made a perfectly solid return to action when third here under a penalty.

But he has barely grown an inch since last term and I’m not convinced he can reach the same heights as a three-year-old.

He will likely be short enough wherever he goes next, but I think he will be vulnerable.
