The Queen and Prince Philip will be leaving Windsor Castle for the first time since they began shielding in the estate. The senior royals usually escape to Balmoral in Scotland to spend their summer, and this year will be no different. However, some of their favourite events will not be allowed to go on due to the pandemic, as ITV Royal Rota podcast hosts Chris Ship and Lizzie Robinson revealed.

Ms Robinson told listeners: “They go to the Braemar Gathering, see all the Highland Games.

“The Braemar Gathering is normally the first weekend of September.

“That’s where you see the tug-of-war, the hammer throwing, the tossing of the caber.

“There’ll be none of that this year, we’ll have none of those pictures.”

She continued: “But they will get to spend their summer holidays up at Balmoral.

“This is something that we know they love.

“When they go is dependent on whether or not the Government guidelines remain in place.”

The pair are expected to head to Scotland from early August and stay into September.

It’s not yet known where Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, will be spending their summer.

The couple normally go to Birkhall on the Balmoral estate, which is where they spent a lot of the lockdown.

Camilla was last seen at Highgrove House in Gloucestershire where she received a new role.

The Duchess of Cornwall was appointed the new Colonel in Chief of The Rifles Regiment, a position handed over from Prince Philip.

Her father-in-law completed his half of the ceremony from the Windsor Castle quadrangle, 85 miles away from Highgrove.
