PRISON guards will get heat-seeking detection gear to help seize lags’ illegal phones.

The devices alert staff when a mobile is detected and flash its exact location on a heat map.

Staff can also use data to spot emerging patterns such as inmates plotting to smuggle drugs.

The move is part of a £70million Government investment in safety and security to keep control of prisons.

Justice Secretary David Gauke said: “As criminals look for new ways to smuggle contraband into prisons, it is vital that we stay one step ahead.

“This is vital to ensuring prisons are places of safety and rehabilitation, where offenders can turn their backs on crime for good.”


Around 11,000 phones were found in jails last year. Gangsters use them to maintain outside criminal networks or terrorise victims.

The new technology, which pinpoints heat and radio waves

from phones, is already in five prisons after a successful six-month trial in one.
