Many royal experts have speculated Prince William could or even should become King instead of his father. Now it seems even Prince William’s mother, Princess Diana, had an opinion on whether the crown should skip a generation.
During her November 1995 interview with BBC1’s Panorama, Diana was asked by journalist Martin Bashir who she thinks should take the throne.
He questioned: “Do you think it would make more sense in the light of the marital difficulties that you and the Prince of Wales have had, if the position of monarch passed directly to your son Prince William?”
At the time of the interview Prince William was just 13-years-old.
Princess Diana replied: “Well, then you have to see that William’s very young at the moment, so do you want a burden like that to be put on his shoulders at such an age?

“So I can’t answer that question.”
Mr Bashir pressed the princess further on the topic.
He asked: “Would it be your wish that when Prince William comes of age that he were to succeed the queen rather than the current Prince of Wales?”
Diana said: “My wish is that my husband finds peace of mind, and from that follows others things, yes.”

Princess Diana news: The historic interview came at a time of great tensions within the Royal Family and her marriage to Charles
The historic interview came at a time of great tensions within the Royal Family and her marriage to Charles.
Princess Diana shared her anguish about her failing marriage to Prince Charles in the tell-all interview.
During the interview, the Princess of Wales admitted to having had affairs after realising her relationship with Charles had reached its end years prior.
The candid confession prompted the Queen to put her foot down and ordered her son and daughter-in-law to divorce but also sparked the fury of Princess Margaret.

The Queen’s sister deemed the interview the “ultimate act of betrayal.”
Royal expert Victoria Arbiter told Channel 5’s ‘Princess Margaret: Rebel without a Crown’ documentary: “As far as Margaret was concerned, that was the ultimate act of betrayal.
“Margaret had had her own infidelities but you don’t talk about them in a public forum.
“You don’t air your dirty laundry and, more than that, you don’t throw the entire Royal Family, and with it the institution of monarchy, under the bus.
“She was furious.”
Former BBC royal correspondent Jenny Bond suggested the interview cemented Margaret’s “unsympathetic” conduct towards Diana after years of “jealousy.”

Ms Bond said: “I think when Diana came on the scene and Fergie, with the focus of all the press attention around the UK, she was plain jealous.
“She had been the belle of the ball, she had been the one people wanted to follow.
“So I think she was jealous and she was unsympathetic towards their behaviour.
“I know that after Diana’s interview with Panorama, when she divulged everything to Marin Bashir, Margaret was utterly appalled.”

Broadcaster Ayesha Hazarika questioned Margaret’s behaviour with Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson, suggesting her experience fending off public attention could have helped both women in settling down as senior members of the Royal Family.
Ms Hazarika said: “There is a great irony to how Margaret reacts to Diana and Sarah Ferguson.
“They, of course, had to go through quite a torrid time in their relationships, they have a large amount of press intrusion.
“You would think that Margaret, having gone through all this, might have been slightly kind and a wee bit benevolent but she’s quite harsh towards them.”
