Paul Harrison, who has earned thousands from books and sell-out talks claiming to be an FBI profiler, said he was “weak and vulnerable”.

He wrote on Facebook he was quitting his live shows and social media.

Harrison, who claimed to have interviewed Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy and Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe, admitted descriptions of his career were “misleading”.

But a string of former FBI agents — and even the Yorkshire Ripper — branded him a liar and said he had made it all up.

It has also emerged he faked his own death to get out of a copyright court case which would have left him a huge legal bill if he had lost.

As the prospect of a fraud probe loomed, he wrote:  “This monster is no longer mine, nor is it what I wanted it to be.”

“I saw it as a tool to give victims a voice, everywhere, but because I’m weak and vulnerable and utterly useless at decision making I was introduced into sensationalising events by promoters who often sent out misleading blurb. Something I had to live up to.

“I’ve decided to call it a day for now. No more shows or interaction on social media. All I wanted to do was help raise the profile of victims everywhere. Now, it seems I’ve let everyone down, I’m sorry for that.

The former beat bobby, 59, of Doncaster, admitted: “I’ve let everyone down, I’m sorry.”

Disgruntled fans have urged police to investigate him for fraud but South Yorkshire Police refused to say whether they were probing him despite his online confession.

A spokeswoman said: “We can neither confirm nor deny the identity of anyone who may or not be subject to a police investigation.”
