NO PLAYER has successfully dribbled past Liverpool’s ace Virgil van Dijk in the last 12 months, new stats have emerged.
The Dutch defender has been in stellar form this campaign, making him one of the candidates for the Premier League Player of the Season award.
Liverpool had to smash the world transfer record and pay Southampton £75million in order to bring Van Dijk to Anfield.
But the Reds surely do not regret a single penny spent on the defender, who has transformed Jurgen Klopp’s side into a genuine title contender.
Which is an incredible accomplishment, considering he was close to death ten years ago after suffering an appendix burst.
Liverpool are currently two points clear at the top of the table, although second-placed Manchester City have one game in hand.
And their mean Van Dijk-led defence – tightest since Chelsea won the Premier League in the 2004/05 season – is one of the main reasons the Reds were able to throw down the gauntlet in the title race.
But a new stats show again how incredible a season the Dutch defender is having.
According to the Mail, no one has dribbled past Van Dijk since March 2018.
The last player to succeed in doing so was Newcastle’s midfielder Mikel Merino, who spent just one year at St James’ Park and has moved to Real Sociedad since then.
However, Van Dijk is not error-free as he gifted Fulham a goal after a miscommunication with keeper Alisson ahead of the international break.
But Holland coach Ronald Koeman was actually happy to see his ace FINALLY make a mistake, claiming it would eventually end the hype surrounding him in the British media.
