He said he would only be stopped if a cross-party fudge took us out of Europe before next month’s vote.

But Farage claimed that would mean his party winning a General Election as voters would feel “the betrayal will be so complete”.

And he won unlikely support from EU Brexit chief Guy Verhofstadt, who wants the threat from his Brexit Party to force Tories and Labour to strike a deal.

He tweeted: “Maybe the only thing that can save us is Nigel Farage now.”

“He’s already campaigning with the Brexit party catching up the Conservatives in the polls, and the old parties risk to be wiped out during the election.

“My advice is if they are not stupid, both parties, they’ll make a cross-party deal immediately in the coming days to avoid this imminent disaster.”

But his remarks drew ire from Council chief Donald Tusk, who drily noted that they had been enthusiastically applauded by Mr Farage.
