Newborn baby found alive in plastic bag after walker heard crying in woods as cops hunt mum

Police are now searching for the mother of the little girl, who still had her umbilical cord attached and was “perhaps an hour old”.

Alan Ragatz said it was an “act of God” that he found the abandoned tot in Cumming, Georgia on Thursday.

He said he was walking in a wooded area with his three teenage daughters when they heard a “strange cry”.

Speaking to WSB-TV, Alan said they initially thought the cries were coming from an animal.

He told the news channel: “We went down, pulled it up. There was a poor little baby wrapped in a plastic bag, and we called 911.

“She was alive. She was crying, so we figured that was a good sign. Could have been worse.”

Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office said on Facebook that a caller reported hearing a baby crying in the woods Thursday at about 10.08pm.

The baby was given first aid at the scene and taken to a local hospital, where she was named India.

She is now said to be in good condition.

Forsyth County Sheriff Ron Freeman said it was “a divine intervention” that India was found – and thanked the Ragatz family.

He said: “If it wasn’t for these citizens, we would be having a different conversation.”

Georgia’s Department of Family and Children Services was notified about India and is now said to be advocating for her while she’s in the hospital.

Anyone who knows a woman who was in the late stages of pregnancy that might’ve given birth to the baby is asked to call the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.
