MORE grip, more feel and good mileage – that’s what we want from our tyres and that’s what Bridgestone says it has achieved with the new S22 Battlax.

Tyres aren’t particularly sexy, and as such are often overlooked – seen as a necessary consumable to be replaced as rarely as possible.

But tyres are the only things that connect you to the road. As well as outright grip, they affect how the bike steers, its stability and how quickly you can stop when the unexpected happens.

This latest sports tyre from Bridgestone is aimed at road riding, rather than outright track use, so it needed to be stable, predictable and to work from cold.

And, of course, they need to work in wet conditions to be any use in the UK.

Cold performance is crucial on a road tyre – you need good grip and feel more than ever when you’re on those first few turns from home, or on a chilly ride in the winter.

Bridgestone has worked hard to improve this, resulting in a tyre that grips well and gives you confidence straight away.

We didn’t get a chance to test the wet weather performance but we’ll get a set on test in the UK and get back to you.

The track test Bridgestone arranged might seem like a strange choice for a road tyre, but the aim was to allow riders to push the tyres – which cost £270 fitted for a set – to the limit in a safe environment.

That is perhaps the most impressive trick up the S22’s sleeve – the versatility to be abused around a racetrack and still be fine on the ride to work the next day.

When pushing the tyre to the limits of its grip, it still remains predictable, breaking traction gradually and without suddenly letting go.

Now, you’re unlikely to be sliding your bike out of every turn on your Sunday road ride, but it’s good to know that if you do get overexcited, the tyre is going to look after you.

They might not be the most glamorous component but give them some love, check the pressures regularly and get a set that works well in the conditions you ride in.
