THIS is the terrifying moment passengers were thrown into their air after a drunk driver smashed his convertible into another motor while he was “showing off”.
Footage shows Damian Cleaver, who was already banned from driving, zoom around the corner in his Vauxhall Astra and crash head-on into an oncoming Mercedes.
In the shock clip, the two passengers in the back of his car fly out of their seats and land slumped on the doors.
The Mercedes driver suffered whiplash, while Cleaver’s four passengers got minor injuries, Leicester Crown Court heard.
The crash happened while he was already being chased by the police for dangerous driving.
Cleaver, of Beaumont Leys, Leicester, was arrested at the scene and failed a roadside breathalyser test, according to Leicestershire Live.
Five hours later he was tested at a police station and his reading was just over 40 microgrammes in 100 millilitres – five over the legal limit.
Alexander Wolfson, prosecuting, said:”The defendant was flying down the road and went head on into a Mercedes.
“The other driver had no chance of avoiding him.
“The defendant’s car first caught the attention of the police because it was being driven too fast on Loughborough Road and that’s why officers decided to follow.”
‘NO CHANCE OF AVOIDING IT’
The Mercedes driver, who had only just dropped off his children nearby, said he was “shocked and disturbed” by the crash but felt lucky to have survived.
Leicester Crown Court also saw selfie video footage from one of the passengers, who filmed himself as they were being chased by police.
The screen went blank at the moment the cars crashed.
The video showed just the face of the passenger but music and police sirens could be heard in the background.
Judge Ebraham Mooncey said: “When one watches the CCTV it’s very frightening indeed.
“I’m quite satisfied you were showing off, driving that open top car, at speed during daytime.
Your history of offending is horrendous
Judge Ebraham Mooncey
“It was a residential area and you had no regard for other road users.
“You turned the corner and crashed into a car and there could have been very serious injuries and death, all sorts of things could have happened.
“Fortunately nobody was injured more than they were.
“You were being pursued by the police with the siren on.
“You had caught their attention because you were speeding down Loughborough Road in the first place.
“Your history of offending is horrendous.
“You had no right to buy that car in the first place.”
