Ms Sykes awkwardly lashed out at the former first lady while preparing to entertain at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner way back in 2009. Ms Obama had tried to make conversation with Ms Sykes but was blown off. Ms Sykes revealed she will kick herself thinking about it, the New York Times reported.

Ms Sykes recounted the life moment during an interview with the paper to promote her Netflix special, Not Normal.

She told the New York Times: “When I did the dinner, I was sitting pretty much right next to Michelle Obama.

“She kept trying to make conversation, but I was so focused on having to go up and perform that I was blowing her off.

“I think I even looked at her one time like: ‘Will you shut up? Don’t you see I’m sitting here going over my notes?’”.

However, Ms Sykes said the previous First Lady had laughed it off.

Ms Sykes said: “I saw her on her book tour, and we laughed about it.

“She was like, ‘I was just trying to make conversation, and you wanted nothing to do with me.’ “

The comedian went on to explain how she got into comedy.

She told the New York Times: “After graduation, I moved to the Maryland and D.C. area, and when you live there, you end up working for the government.

“After four or five years of that, I was like, ‘I need to do something else.’

“I just remembered everyone telling me I should do stand-up.”

“I’m looking through my high school yearbook and it was all people saying, ‘You should be onstage’.”

Ms Sykes recounted her first joke being about auto shade car windows.
