Michel Barnier exposed: MP pinpoints why Brexit chief will sacrifice EU in UK trade talks

Brexit trade deal talks between the UK and EU have appeared to come to a halt as little has been agreed by the two parties. However, Brexiteer Tory MP Peter Lilley has argued this could be about to change due to Michel Barnier. While speaking to Brexit Watch on their Youtube channel, Mr Lilley claimed a good Canada-style deal was more likely for the UK now.

He claimed Michel Barnier’s political aspirations will drive him to make a success of the Brexit trade talks by any means.

Mr Lilley argued Mr Barnier will take steps to avoid a no deal scenario, and eventually agree to the demands of the UK.

The Tory MP said: “I now think, on the whole, it is more likely that we will end up with a reasonable free trade deal than not.

“It is at least a 50/50 chance that we will get a sensible deal.

“That is partly because the EU doesn’t like deals.”

Mr Lilley explained the crucial role Michel Barnier will have in securing a good deal for Britain in the EU trade talks.

He continued: “If the EU puts someone in charge of negotiating they expect them to reach a conclusion.

“Michel Barnier may well like to become a future Prime Minister of France.

“David Frost and his team has done both those things.

“The other side can’t make all the running and pretend they don’t know where we stand.

“The chances of a sensible deal are greater than they otherwise would be.

“For the last four years, I have been one of those saying that a no deal is much more likely than most people imagine.

“But I also think it is much less damaging than most people try to make us believe.
