Man Utd’s six-man summer transfer list to improve defence including Varane, Kouliably and Alderweireld

MANCHESTER UNITED look set to solve their defensive dilemma by signing a new world class centre back this summer.

The Reds have already been linked to a number of stars including Kalidou Koulibaly and Raphael Varane as they look to find a permanent partner for Victor Lindelof.

United may have nine of their last ten matches, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s defence is in desperate need of reinforcements.

Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Eric Bailly have struggled to fit the bill alongside Lindelof at the heart of the defence.

Whether Solskjaer is still the manager or not, the club’s board are expected to splash the cash at the end of the season.

The Reds, who are pushing for a top four spot this term, have also been linked to Harry Maguire, Milan Skriniar, Toby Alderweireld and Alessio Romagnoli.

Kalidou Koulibaly has also attracted interest from Spanish giants Real Madrid

Kalidou Koulibaly

Napoli ace Koulibaly has been the No1 target for the Reds since last summer and they are hell-bent on landing him this time around.

The 31-cap Senegal international has attracted a wide range of interest this season following his sublime spell of form.

But United would have to fork out around £90 million to sign him after they saw two bids rejected.

And Napoli boss Carlo Ancelotti has claimed that the 27-year-old is keen to stay with the Serie A side, who he joined in 2014.

Raphael Varane

Real Madrid star Varane, 25, has emerged as a top target for the Reds and he has been linked to the club since Jose Mourinho was in the hot seat.

It was reported that the United’s board were prepared to spend £100m to sign him in January.

Old Trafford veteran Wes Brown has insisted the 53-cap France International is right the defender for the job.

He said: “The dream defender would be Raphael Varane. He would cost a lot and it would need to be the right fit for United.”

Toby Alderweireld

The Tottenham centre back, 29, was continuously linked to United last summer, but the club’s board vetoed the move for tactical reasons.

Spurs have now exercised a clause in his contract to extend his deal with the club until 2020 and he now has a £25m release clause.

Alderweireld admitted he is happy with the decision, but he rejected a long-term deal with the club.

He would be a cheaper option for United and is expected to remain on the club’s radar.

Harry Maguire

England’s World Cup star signed a new five-year deal with Leicester in September, but that will not deter United.

The Reds would be able to double Maguire’s £75,000-a-week wages and could splash out £60m to sign him.

And Solksjaer was full of praise for the 25-year-old following United’s 1-0 win over Claude Puel’s side on Sunday.

He said: “I think that Harry Maguire has got a magnet on his head because it nearly always drops to him. A fantastic player in the box.”

Inter Milan are keen to tie Milan Skriniar down with a new long-term deal

Milan Skriniar

The Inter Milan star, 23, possesses all the credentials needed to fill the void at the heart of United’s defence.

He was Serie A’s top tackler and did not miss a single league match last season.

But the Italian side do not want to offload him and he has slated reports that dismissed claims that he is going to leave.

Inter, who are third in the Serie A, want to tie him down with a new deal that will keep him at the San Siro until 2022.

Alessio Romagnoli

It is understood that United are keeping tabs on AC Milan centre-back Romagnoli, 24.

But the eight-cap Italy international is under contract with Gennaro Gattuso’s side until 2022.

After he extended his deal, he admitted he was happy at the Serie A side and hopes to play their for many years.

But following a shaky start to the season, United could swoop for the Italian defender.
