Manchester United remain in the running to sign Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz despite Chelsea leading the race for the 21-year-old’s signature. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s main priority this summer is Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho.
However, United and Dortmund are some way off in their valuations of the England international so Solskjaer has to look at alternatives.
The Bundesliga side have slapped a £115million price tag on Sancho but United are unwilling to spend more than £50m.
Sky Sports claim the Red Devils are still hoping to put together a package to sign the 20-year-old but they are also keeping a watchful eye on Havertz.
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has made the Germany international his priority after already capturing Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner.
But if United enter the bidding it could be bad news for the Blues as the price will rocket.
Pedro and Willian are set to leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the season so Lampard still requires more attacking reinforcements.
Havertz’s versatility enables him to play behind the striker or in a wide position which will be a huge boost to west Londoners.
Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich have all been linked with making a move for Havertz but Sky Sports add they are not in a position to do so this year.
Meanwhile, former Chelsea defender Craig Burley reckons it makes sense for Lampard to try and sign Havertz.
“If they get Werner, he can play wide or through the middle. Havertz is flexible as well. They may be a little top-heavy, in terms of their forward line.
“But it would be a statement from [Roman] Abramovich to say, ‘we’ve given you Werner and we also want Havertz, one of the brightest talents in European football’.”
