Man Utd move to sign Chelsea transfer target who Frank Lampard thought was done deal

Manchester United are the new surprise frontrunners to sign Chelsea transfer target Ben Chilwell, according to reports. The Red Devils have been looking for a new left-back which casts doubts over Luke Shaw’s long-term future.

The Sun claim Chelsea boss Frank Lampard thought he was on the verge of taking Chilwell to Stamford Bridge.

Leciester had set a price tag of around £60million and the Blues were confident of wrapping up the deal after signing Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner.

However, the report suggests United are at the head of the queue as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to complete his squad overhaul.

Chilwell will not be allowed to leave on the cheap as the 23-year-old has four years remaining on his current contract.

Leicester are also in a decent financial position after selling Harry Maguire to United for £80m last year.

Lampard is desperate for a new full-back and was fully expecting Chilwell to be part of his squad next season.

But United are now in the driving seat to get the deal over the line.

The Sun add that Manchester City are also keeping tabs on the England international as they are losing patience with injury-ridded Benjamin Mendy.

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers will be desperate to keep hold of one of his top defenders, especially if the Foxes secure Champions League football next season.

Leicester could fall out of the Champions League places tonight if United beat Southampton at Old Trafford.

Finishing in the top four of the Premier League may be the only way to fend off interest in their leading stars.
