PEP GUARDIOLA has stepped up his pursuit of Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele.
The Manchester City boss has made Ndombele, 22, his No1 target as a long-term successor to Fernandinho.
City are preparing a £70million bid for the France international in the summer and will compete with Manchester United and Juventus for him.
Dutch midfielder Frenkie De Jong was a target for Pep but will join Barcelona at the end of the season.
That has prompted City to land Ndombele, who played against them in the Champions League group stage.
City were also impressed with Ndombele’s team-mate Houssem Aouar.
But Ndombele, who has four years left on his Lyon deal, is their priority.
Fernandinho, 33, remains a vital part of the Citizens midfield but will need to be replaced in the coming years.
Guardiola was keen on Jorginho last summer but the former Napoli star opted to follow Maurizio Sarri to Chelsea.
