Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk is set to undergo surgery on a damaged anterior cruciate ligament after Jordan Pickford’s horror tackle in the Merseyside derby on Saturday.
It is not yet clear how long the 29-year-old will be unavailable for although the Reds are likely to be without their influential centre-half for the rest of the Premier League campaign.
The news, which comes after Van Dijk went for scans at hospital on Saturday and then had a specialist consultation on Sunday, is a significant blow to Liverpool’s hopes of retaining their title.
The Dutchman has been a major part of their Champions League and Premier League success in the past two seasons.
Before going off in the first 10 minutes at Goodison Park, Van Dijk had not missed a minute of action in England’s top flight since January 2018.
