Borussia Dortmund are being extremely obvious in their attempts to stop Jadon Sancho handing in a transfer request after putting five of their players up to speak to the press about Manchester United’s reported interest.
It is extremely rare that a club of Dortmund’s magnitude allow such a vast amount of stars to speak to the media on the same day.
Just 24 hours after United missed the cut-off for Sancho, Michael Zorc warned that the England international would no longer be allowed to leave this summer.
Dortmund jetted to their pre-season training camp on Monday and they do not want their preparations for the 2020/21 campaign to be disrupted.
The only way Sancho can force through a switch to Old Trafford would be by handing in a transfer request and going on strike – similar to how Ousmane Dembele and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang left the Westfalenstadion.
However, Dortmund’s media trick yesterday, in which five of their stars spoke of how excited they are to have Sancho stay at the club, adds an extra degree of pressure on the winger.
Not only would Sancho have to go against the club, but it would also look like he is turning against his team-mates if he walks away – an image no player ever wants to portray.
Defender Mats Hummels was the first to express his happiness that Sancho would not be leaving.
“He can be the player who makes the difference,” the 31-year-old said. “I’m happy that he is staying.”
Striker Erling Braut Haaland, who United attempted to sign in January, added: “Jadon is a fantastic player. I’m very happy that he is staying.
“I hope he will continue to score many goals and help us as a team to win as many games as possible.”
And Thomas Delaney commented: “With Jadon staying, our options are greater. He’s one of the best players in the Bundesliga.
“You just have to look at his goals and assists last season. He’s still very young and I don’t know if he might get any better.
“But I also expect a lot from him in the next season. He’s just extraordinarily talented.”
