I say the most awful things to my mum sometimes and I feel so ashamed

DEAR DEIDRE: I GET so angry at my mum and call her horrible names. I am ashamed of my behaviour.

I am a guy of 29 but still live at home, as I can’t afford a place of my own. I find it so frustrating.

I am no angel and have made a lot of mistakes. I was into drugs and drink as a teenager and didn’t work for years. Now I have a good job and have kicked my bad habits.

Yet we do nothing but argue and are at each other’s throats all the time. I know it is my fault. I make her miserable and sometimes feel like it is not worth it any longer.

DEIDRE SAYS: It is great you have taken the first step to changing your behaviour by recognising it.

I imagine you had some tough early experiences. Where is your dad?

You probably have a lot of rage bottled up about events when you were powerless to change them.

My e-leaflet on Managing Anger explains self-help.
