HUAWEI is designing a smartphone with a screen on both sides, according to a new patent.

The Chinese brand is set to launch its P30 device later this month but is already creating new concepts.

Huawei’s latest patent suggests that the extra screen will be on the back of the phone next to a triple camera design which is commonly found on phones in the Huawei Mate series.

The horizontal triple-lens setup on the back features one lens that is square, as opposed to round, which suggests the device could have the same periscopic camera system as found in the P30.

The front facing design of the phone more closely resembles the P30 with a very small notch for facial recognition.

A back screen is likely to be for selfie purposes as the absence of a front camera would surely concern some customers.

As this creation is only at the patent stages there is no guarantee that the device will ever be created.

Huawei are already experimenting with different screens in their existing creations though.

The foldable Huawei Mate X has front and rear cameras for selfie taking and to give the person you’re taking a picture of the opportunity to adjust themselves accordingly.

Huawei president of consumer business in Western Europe Walter Ji described the foldable Huawei Mate X at a recent preview of the device as “good for taking photos of your girlfriend” due to the two sided camera ability of the phone.

The patent was spotted by Dutch tech news blog LetsGoDigital.

Apple’s rumoured iPhone 11 won’t be a foldable smartphone – but the 2020 model might be.

The Huawei Mate X, which costs an eye-watering £2,000, folds like a book via a flexible ‘hinge’ that runs down the middle.

Huawei is also releasing three new laptops to take on Apple’s domineering Macbook series.
