But what else do we know about the writer and broadcaster who once dreamed of being a rock star?
Who is Monty Don and who is his wife?
Monty was born on July 8, 1955, in West Berlin during the Cold War but was brought up in Hampshire where he became an avid gardener and farmer.
He was educated at a variety of schools including Quidhampton School in Basingstoke.
He read English at Magdalene College, Cambridge University.
It was at university where he met future wife, Sarah, who went on to train as a jeweller.
Monty and his wife ran a costume jewellery business in the 1980s.
The couple have three children, two sons Adam and Tom, and a daughter Freya.
They live in Ivington, Herefordshire, and Monty presents Gardeners’ World from his own garden.
How did he end up presenting Gardeners’ World?
Since 1988 Monty has worked full-time as a gardening author, journalist and broadcaster.
He has gardened on television for over twenty years and starred on This Morning.
Other roles have included presenting Channel 4’s Real Gardens and Fork to Fork.
He also wrote gardening columns for national newspapers.
In 2003 he was chosen as the new presenter of Gardeners’ World on BBC Two.
He replaced Alan Titchmarsh. and was the first self-taught horticulturist to present the show.
He stood down in 2008 nut returned in March 2011.
It is described as being a “gardening show packed with good ideas, tips and advice” which airs on Friday on BBC Two at 8.30pm.

Has Monty Don worked outside of television?
Aside from working in television, Monty has also served as The Observer’s gardening editor from 1994 to 2006 and has written a gardening column for the Daily Mail.
His first book, The Prickotty Bush was published in 1990 and there have been many more since – two with his wife Sarah
He also presents the annual Chelsea Flower Show.

What are Monty Don’s interests?
The presenter is said to love hedges, woodland, topiary, vegetables, fruit and all plants that capture a season, mood or spirit of place.
He loathes houseplants, begonias and horticultural pedantry.
Plus he lists his favourite garden jobs as planting and cutting anything from grass to logs.
Monty is also passionate about organic gardening.
Outside of gardening, according to BT.com, Monty wanted to be a rock star when he was a teenager.
He said: “At that time there was nothing I wanted more”.
Speaking at the Cheltenham Literature Festival last year, Monty described how his dogs have helped him through the “black periods” of his depression.
He said the pets made think of something other than himself when he suffered from mental health issues.
Don owns four dogs – two golden retrievers called Nigel and Nelli as well as Brenda, a Dachshund, and Jack Russell Barry-Anne.
