FRANK LAMPARD could become Chelsea manager less than 12 months after landing his first job as a coach.
The Derby boss’ name has been mentioned by Blues chiefs as they consider Maurizio Sarri’s future at the club.
Zinedine Zidane remains Chelsea’s No1 choice – and bringing him in could attract the likes of Isco, Mauro Icardi and Kalidou Koulibaly.
But should Stamford Bridge legend Lampard find himself in the hotseat, how would his team line up?
Here, SunSport hazards a guess at Lamps’ possible Chelsea XI.
GK: Kepa Arrizabalaga
UNLIKELY to drop a £72million keeper.
Spain star made a gaffe letting in Paul Pogba’s header in Monday’s 2-0 FA Cup defeat to Manchester United but could do with a bit more confidence and a better defence in front of him.
Still has plenty of potential at just 24.
LATEST CHELSEA NEWS
RB: Cesar Azpilicueta
DEFENSIVELY as sound as ever but has come under spotlight after some of Sarri’s sides’ more boring displays.
Having won two Premier League titles, the FA Cup and League Cup under different managers, has proven what an asset he can be in the right system.
CB: Antonio Rudiger
CHELSEA’S most impressive defender this season would surely keep his place.
German has pace, power and positional awareness and is a rock at the back.
CB: Andreas Christensen
LOOKED set to play this season after nailing down a regular spot last term.
Antonio Conte’s exit – and Sarri’s change to four at the back – was costly for the Dane.
At just 22 he can only get better.
LB: Ben Chilwell
SURE to spark a summer scramble in the summer after standout Leicester performances and an England call-up.
Manchester City are lining up a move for the £40m-rated full-back but Lampard might be interested after Marcos Alonso’s fall from grace this term.
If that fails, there’s always a spot for Ashley Cole…
CDM: N’Golo Kante
CHELSEA’S best ever midfielder would surely revert Frenchman to his natural position.
By guarding the defence, Kante allows more creative players to get forward – something Lampard appreciates.
CM: Declan Rice
MAN CITY want West Ham star as a long-term replacement for Fernandinho.
But Lampard could draw on his Hammers connections and wrangle a deal for the newly-pledged Englishman.
CM: Ruben Loftus-Cheek
LAMPARD is not just a Chelsea legend but a fan as well – and knows how important bringing through youth is to the club.
Loftus-Cheek is yet to win over a manager at Stamford Bridge and even when fit is normally a squad player.
Mason Mount, on loan at Derby from Chelsea, would be another option having impressed under Lampard this season.
RW: Callum Hudson-Odoi
IF Chelsea manage to hold onto him in the summer, Lampard would have to prove to the youngster he has a future at Stamford Bridge.
Stubborn Sarri has barely given Hudson-Odoi a chance but the flashes of flair and trickery he has shown surely warrants game time.
Would also earn Lamps plenty of brownie points with fans – not that he needs them.
LW: Eden Hazard
SPENT two years playing together and Lampard has only seen the Belgian’s stock rise since.
Undeniably, getting the best out of Hazard – and convincing him to sign a new deal – would be task No1.
ST: Romelu Lukaku
KNOWS the striker well from his three-year spell at Stamford Bridge between 2011-14, even though he was shipped out on loan for two years.
Lukaku has fallen behind Marcus Rashford in the Manchester United pecking order and may not be opposed to returning to Chelsea, having almost done so in 2017.
Though he’d have some explaining to do after taunting the Blues on social media after Monday’s FA Cup clash.
