Staff members told the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) that the pair had been drinking alcohol, and fell asleep – forgetting to feed the elephant.

Local media reports claim the 40-year-old animal had attacked several animals in the day.

Initially, the 50-year-old head handler Satheeshan, was hospitalised before his 45-year-old employee Bajiu was killed.

Shocking footage captured the elephant tossing Baiju in the air like a rag doll with its trunk and tusks.

It is unclear what will happen to the elephant following the handler’s death.

‘IT WAS ANGRY’

Experts from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) arrived at the compound to tranquilise the animal after Bajiu was attacked.

SPCA spokesperson Dr. B. Aravind told local media: “We suspect that the attacks were a manifestation of its anger of being subjected to starvation.”

Dr. Aravind added: “After the first attack, Rajasekharan’s owner Shaji came to the spot and started feeding it.

“That was when Baiju came near the elephant.

“As soon as he came under its reach, the animal picked him up in his trunk, shook him violently and thrashed him on the ground.”
