Frozen 2 release date: When is Frozen sequel out in cinemas?

The trailer for the much anticipated sequel to Frozen has just been released and promises a darker follow-up to the hit 2013 film. Frozen 2 features the many of the characters from the first film but does not reveal much about the movie’s plot. The trailer shows Elsa battling through the waves and essentially walking on water by turning it to ice.

The other characters to return include Elsa’s sister Anna, Olaf the snowman, Anna’s love interest iceman Kristof and his accomplice Sven.

Dramatic Sami-influenced music plays throughout the trailer, which hints at a film which may be darker in tone than the first instalment.

When is Frozen 2 release date?

Frozen 2 will be released on November 22, 2019 in the US and UK and on December 26, in Australia.

Disney UK has posted the trailer on Twitter, commenting: “This November, get ready for Frozen 2.”

Josh Gad, who provides the voice for Olaf, posted the trailer on his Instagram with a message reading: “Surprise!”

Anna is seen struggling through mountains in the two-minute trailer and the comic snowman Olaf is shown being defended as the group of main characters appear to discover a landscape locked in autumn.

The sequel is directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee – the same duo who presided over the original Frozen.

The original film was loosely based on Hans Christian Anderson’s The Snow Queen.

The original film grossed $876 million (£681 million) worldwide and won two Oscars – for best animated film and best song for Let It Go.

Frozen’s writer and co-director Jennifer Lee has reportedly been considering giving Elsa a female love interest.

As Elsa’s sexuality was not made clear in the first film, many fans decided to start a petition calling for her to come out as gay.

Lee said during an interview with The Huffington Post: “I love everything people are saying [and] people are thinking about our film – that it’s creating dialogue, that Elsa is this wonderful character that speaks to so many people.

“It means the world to us that we’re part of these conversations. Where we’re going with it, we have tons of conversations about it, and we’re really conscientious about these things.

“For me…Elsa’s every day telling me where she needs to go, and she’ll continue to tell us.

“I always write from character-out, where Elsa is and what Elsa’s doing in her life, she’s telling me every day. We’ll see where we go.”

All the original stars are onboard, Idina Mezel, Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff and Josh Gad with music once again from Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez.

Frozen 2 will be released on November 22, 2019 in the USA and UK.
