The follow-up story is in much the same mould as the Love Actually reunion in 2017, and the new short film will air on the BBC on Red Nose Day next month. Called One Red Nose Day And A Wedding, its first photo has been revealed – with much of the principle cast back in place, including Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell. Rowan Atkinson, Kristin Scott Thomas, Sophie Thompson, John Hannah, Anna Chancellor, David Haig, and James Fleet are also aboard.
“You have to trust the script,” Mike Newell told Entertainment Weekly of the process behind the new tale.
“If the script makes you laugh, then any difficulty goes away.
“I always assumed that it would work fine.”
Four Weddings and a Funeral followed Charles (Grant) finding happiness with Carrie (MacDowell), with plenty of love and loss along the way.
It became a huge success; regularly featuring in Best Of All Time lists, especially those specific to the romantic comedy genre.
It even received Oscars nods for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay; plus Grant won Best Actor – Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes.
In fact, the movie is credited with sending Grant’s career stratospheric, particularly in the US. He went on to make his name in other romcoms like Notting Hill and Bridget Jones’s Diary.
Grant has continued to pick up acclaim in recent years, with awards nominations for his work in TV mini-series A Very English Scandal and family caper Paddington 2.
MacDowell, meanwhile, has recently joined the cast of TV favourite Cuckoo, and had roles in the likes of Magic Mike XXL, 30 Rock, Netflix’s Christmas Inheritance, and teen comedy Monte Carlo.
Her daughter Margaret Qualley is also making a name for herself: she led the small cast of recent Netflix drama Io.
Newell is back to helm the Four Weddings follow-up, with some surprise special guests believed to be in line to appear.
It will air on Red Nose Day in the UK on March 15.
