The body has a special way of alerting and giving signs when there is an underlying health condition. In these cases, often the foods we eat will either help or hinder the health condition. Vitamins and minerals are nutrients for the body and help to ensure the body functions work effectively. When there is something unusual taking place on or in the body, it is a way of signalling a lack of a certain vitamins or minerals that you are not getting from your daily diet and a supplement may be needed.

An unusual sign in your mouth and gums means you need to be taking a folic acid supplements.
When a person starts to develop pale and painful gums it could mean a folic acid deficiency. What was once a normal, healthy pink, is now a pale colour which has faded.
This paleness also affects the tongue and the mucus membranes inside the mouth and the tongue also becomes swollen and smooth.
A folic acid supplement helps make healthy red blood cells. Pale gums often indicate that a person has anaemia which is a result of a lack of folate.
The more red blood cells the body has, the less pale the colour of the gums and the less inflammation of the tongue.
Folic acid supplements help treats anaemia which is a condition that occurs when there is not enough red blood cells.
Other symptoms of folate acid deficiency:
- Extreme tiredness
- Lack of energy
- Feeling faint
- Pale skin
- Heart palpitations
The NHS said: “Folic acid supplements are used to treat or prevent folate deficiency anaemia. It helps an unborn baby’s brain, skull and spinal cord develop properly to avoid development problems such as spina bifida.
“It also helps reduce side effects from methotrexate, a medicine used to treat severe arthritis, Crohn’s disease or psoriasis.
“Folic acid can also be combined with ferrous fumarate and ferrous sulphate to treat iron deficiency anaemia and can be combined with other vitamins and minerals.”
Your doctor will prescribe a daily folic acid supplement and when your folate levels return to normal, you can then slowly stop taking them.
It’s recommended that adults should take one folic acid supplement a day but sometimes you only to take it once a week depending on how severe your iron deficiency is.
