First Picture Of Girl, Nine, Who Died After She Was Hit By A Single Stone In A Freak Accident On Yorkshire Beach As Heartbroken Family Pay Tribute

THIS is the first picture of a nine-year-old girl who died in her mother’s arms after she was hit by a single stone on a beach in a freak accident.

Harriet Emily Nicola Forster, nine, was playing in rock pools on Seaton Garth beach in Staithes, North Yorks, when she was hit on the head by a stone that fell from a cliff.

She was just 30ft away from steps leading up from the beach and was cradled by her distraught mum as horrified onlookers ran for help.

Her devastated family, from Oxford, have now paid tribute to the youngster, saying: “We cannot comprehend the enormity of this tragedy. Harriet was the light of our lives.

“We ask that you give us time as a family to support each other through our indescribable pain. Thank you.”

Fire crews, ambulances and air ambulance rushed to the seaside village of Staithes after the rockfall but sadly Harriet couldn’t be saved and she was declared dead at the scene.

Staithes harbour master and local councillor Norman Fowler, 71, was among passers-by who rushed to the girl’s aid.

He told the Mirror: “She was walking on the rocks with her mum and a stone hit her on the head. It was a freak accident. It was a one-in-a-million chance.”

The family were on a day trip to North Yorkshire from Oxford when tragedy struck.

Mr Fowler said: “I saw the lady cradling her in her arms.

“I sat with the mum. She was incoherent, crying. She was shaking and in shock.

“The cliffs just crumble occasionally. It wasn’t a landslide. It was just one piece of stone.
