The French municipal elections were a great triumph for the Green Party and environmentalists across Europe. French president Emmanuel Macron’s La République en Marche party, however, did poorly in Sunday’s poll. Now the leader of France’s Europe Écologie Les Verts Julien Bayou has said that Mr Macron has only his re-election in mind.

Mr Bayou said: “We have the feeling that Emmanuel Macron is already planning the presidential election rather than working on a project for the country, choosing someone like Castex who will not overshadow him so he can be in the spotlight.

“Our house is burning and the President looks elsewhere.

“Macron is only thinking of his reelection in 2022.”

The French Greens said Mr Macron, in appointing Jean Castex as Prime Minister, only wished to cling to power himself.

He has said that Bayou everything must be started afresh.

He outlined what he means by “new path”.

He said: “Rather than a new model of society, we have the old country, we have a right-wing man who succeeds a right-wing man.

“The reality is that nothing new is happening.”

In saying, “our house is burning and the president is looking elsewhere”, Mr Bayou has echoed the words of former President Jacques Chirac who spoke them in Johannesburg in 2002 tp address the pressing need for the world to make a firm commitment to tackle climate change.

Mr Bayou, the secretary-general of Europe Écologie-Les Verts, went on to say “ecology is needed everywhere”.

He added: “This is the challenge of the 21st century.

“There needs to be a large ministry of ecology that has control over the directions, agriculture, transport, energy because it is structuring but the other ministries must have an ecological vision of their activities.”
