EASTENDERS’ Mel Owen prepares to flee Albert Square with son Hunter as the police close in during Thursday’s episode.

While the rest of Walford deliver hearts and flowers for Valentine’s Day, Mel delivers the news to her troubled son that their time is nearly up as the cops continue to investigate who killed her fiance, Ray Kelly.

The police are on the mother and son’s trail, and so Mel asks on-off lover Jack Branning – who knows Hunter shot Ray – to help the escape.

Mel – played by Tamzin Outhwaite, will do anything to protect her son, but will it be enough to help him get away with murder?

It was revealed last month that Charlie Winter – who plays Hunter – was leaving the BBC soap, but show bosses have been keeping the details of his exit under wraps.

A source told The Daily Star Sunday: “It’s been decided that it’s the end of the road for Hunter.

“Producers don’t feel there is anywhere else for the character to go.”

The axing will come as a surprise for viewers with Hunter being at the centre of one of the show’s biggest storylines.

Hunter murdered his step-father Ray Kelly in gruesome scenes airing over the New Year to save his mum Mel Owen from being strangled by the gangster.

The source added: “Bosses are staying tight-lipped on exactly how Hunter exits Walford, but after he shot Ray dead over New Year it promises to be dramatic.

“Hunter will be on our screens for a while yet and there is still a lot more drama to come as he and his mum face the fallout from his actions.”

Viewers will also have to wait and see if Tamzin, 48, remains on the show, as the show insider said Hunter’s exit gives her character Mel one less reason to stay in Albert Square.

However it does also claim bosses would be “mad” to let her go.

EastEnders airs tonight on BBC One at 7.30pm
