Netflix series Dark reached its climax this year when the third and final instalment of the German sci-fi thriller arrived on the streaming platform. The last run answered many questions and offered a resolution of sorts. Nonetheless there were still questions left open by the final scene of the show, particularly about the fate of many of the characters.

Is Bartosz Tiedemann still alive in the Origin World?

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from all seasons of Dark

In the final scene of Dark, a group of characters were sat around a dinner table in the middle of a storm.

Katharina Nielsen (played by Jordis Triebel), Regina Tiedemann (Deborah Kaufmann), Hannah Kahnwald (Maja Schöne), Peter Doppler (Stephan Kampwirth), Torben Wöller (Leopold Hornung) and Benni Wöller (Anton Rubtsov) were at the table when the lights flickered as the weather played havoc with the electrics.

Hannah was revealed to be pregnant and was considering naming the child Jonas, suggesting some form of the character (Louis Hofmann) could be exist in the Origin World.

There was also the impression Martha Nielsen (Lisa Vicari) could be alive and was simply not present at the dinner.

Aleksander wasn’t tied into the elaborate Winden family tree and so was essentially not really part of the Knot.

There’s nothing to suggest Aleksander didn’t exist in the Origin World with a similarly dark past which saw him stealing someone’s identity and fleeing from Marburg to Winden.

Then again, it does seem odd Aleksander wasn’t at the dinner party in the final scene, suggesting he may not have come to Winden at all and his timeline existed solely within the Knot.

Alternatively, Aleksander may simply not have been able to attend the party with the others.

Again, this suggests Bartosz could very well exist in the Origin World albeit a version of himself.

Speaking about the final scene with The Hollywood Reporter, Dark co-creator Jantje Friese said: “It was one of the things we always wanted to do.

“We always knew we wanted to save Regina. That was the thing Claudia wanted to achieve.

“We wanted to make sure we got there. We wanted to end on something that looks normal.

“We wanted it to be something that everyone can relate to: dinner with family and friends.”

Friese’s words suggest with Regina alive, the door is very much open for other characters to be alive in the Origin World.

She also addressed Hannah’s decision to name her child Jonas, saying: “We are big believers in ambivalence.

“We don’t think there’s only one answer to a thing. That relates to everything. It’s both hopeful and ominous at the same time. In other [projects] we’ve done before, we don’t like to end on a dot.

“We put a dot, wait a little, and then we put a question mark at the end. It’s just a nice nuance with which to end.”
