Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew first married in 1986 at a ceremony at Westminster Abbey in London. The couple have two children together, Princess Beatrice, 30, and Princess Eugenie, 28, and have always kept a good relationship for their family. Even though the pair divorced in 1996, they are thought to have rekindled their friendship years later and are now close friends. Some royal enthusiasts are hoping Sarah and Andrew will get back together, and a royal law means there is now nothing stopping them.
A royal act dating back to 1772 previously meant Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson could not remarrying without the Queen’s consent.
This is the Royal Marriages Act which states the first six people in line to the British throne can’t get married without getting permission from the ruling monarch.
Prince Andrew is the third child of Queen Elizabeth II, and was the sixth in line for the throne until recently.
The Duke of York was behind Prince Charles, 70, Prince William, 36, Prince George, five, Princess Charlotte, three, and Prince Harry, 34.
He was knocked off the sixth spot when Prince Louis was born in April last year and he is currently seventh in line.
According to this old act, Prince Andrew is now free to marry without having to ask the permission of his mum, the Queen.
Many royal enthusiasts are hoping to see Sarah and Andrew get back together and the couple are believed to still share a home.
The Royal Lodge was given to the Duke of York by the Queen in 2004 and just a few years later Sarah it is thought to have moved in.
Sarah and Andrew have kept a close relationship, but despite living together they have often said they are not a couple.
The Duchess opened up about her living situation to radio host Kyle Sandilands in 2016 and revealed she did live with her ex, but they rarely cross paths.
The couple still publicly show support for each other which further fuels rumours they are back together.
In a recent Instagram post, Sarah posted a picture of Andrew at business awards in China and praised her ex.
She wrote: “So proud of @hrhthedukeofyork and the Pitch team in China. Congratulations to all of the entrepreneurs who took part #pitchatpalace.”
Royal fans commented on the couples close relationship and made their pleas for Sarah and Andrew to remarry.
One wrote: “This is the royal wedding everyone wants to see again.”
Another said: “Sarah and Andrew forever!!!!!!”
If they were to have the “wedding everyone wants to see”, they can now do so without needing any royal permission.
