NEW Coronation Street boss Iain MacLeod was tasked with bringing a taste of old-fashioned humour back to the cobbles . . . and he’s certainly going about it the right way.
I’m told one upcoming storyline will see veteran character Steve McDonald accused of taking part in a robbery, but it’s not a return to the dark days of evil Pat Phelan.
In upcoming scenes taxi driver Steve will pick up a fare who asks him to stop at a garage to buy flowers on the way to visit a pal in hospital.
But instead of picking up some tulips and grapes, the local wrong’un robs the petrol station and then forces Steve, played by Simon Gregson, to drive away at speed.
However wheelman Steve and his new pal don’t manage to get away scot-free and soon the police come knocking, thinking the seven-times married taxi firm owner is guilty.
A show source said: “Iain is keen to make sure that Corrie is not all big stunts and doom and gloom.
“It’s always had a comedic edge and he’s trying to inject a bit of that back into it.
“This storyline will put a smile on viewers’ faces.
“Steve has had his fair share of bad luck over the years, but getting caught up in a robbery then being accused himself is new even for him.”
The robbery will play out on screens in the coming months. It will bring viewers some relief in the aftermath of the factory collapse which will kill at least one major character and be the start of the story of the latest Corrie supervillain.
Somehow, I’m not sure that womanising Steve has it in him.

Holly’s switched to Guinness & Lemon
PADDY McGuinness won’t take long to cotton on to how things work at Celebrity Juice with veterans Keith Lemon and Holly Willoughby by his side.
The funnyman is replacing Fearne Cotton on the ITV2 show. Fearne bowed out at the end of the last series, after ten years, and Holly has already promised the experience will “change” her new co-star.
She said: “The good thing is he’s always been really up for playing games in the past. He’s happy to have a good laugh at himself and get stuck in, which is why he’s perfect for the job.
“He could be up for anything. This show definitely changes people.”
He just might want to give Fearne a tinkle first.
Gemma on way back to Essex?
GEMMA Collins is filming her own reality show but Towie bosses are hopeful she will still find time for a cameo in the current ITVBe series.
The GC has been hot property since she stole the limelight on Dancing On Ice and has thrown herself into plans for her new Diva TV series, with Lime Pictures.
But Towie producers know that as one of the longest-running cast members, she is a real hit with viewers.
A TV source said: “Producers are desperate to make Gemma’s cameo work, even though her schedule is packed and her mind is elsewhere.
“She couldn’t make the recent trip to Thailand but the film crew are hoping that now everyone is back on home turf they’ll be able to get a camera in front of her for at least a few scenes.”
Sir Trev travels in style
HE’S turning 80 this summer but Sir Trevor McDonald isn’t showing much sign of retiring after landing a new ITV travel show.
However, the TV legend’s series does give him the chance to put his feet up as he’s transported through India on the world’s most luxurious train, the Maharajas’ Express.
Trevor will be hopping aboard the half-mile long train to bring viewers insights on India’s historic sites, breathtaking landscapes and culture.
A source said: “Trevor may be turning 80 this year but he’s always on board for a new TV project, and what better than hopping onto one of the world’s most luxurious trains to give viewers a spectacular tour of India.”
The show, currently called Trevor McDonald And The Maharajas’ Express, is set to hit screens this summer.
