THERE are handbags at dawn in Coronation Street next week when Liz McDonald finally returns from Spain, after fleeing there for a last-minute holiday instead of testifying at Jenny Bradley and Johnny Connor’s trial.

On hearing Liz has returned from the Costa del Sol, Jenny – Sally Ann Matthews – seeks her out and awkwardly thanks her for sparing her from a jail sentence.

Liz suggests that from now on it’s best if they keep their distance from each other and Jenny agrees.

Liz – played by cobbles legend Beverley Callard – jetted off to Spain last month when she should have been in the dock giving evidence against Jenny and former lover Johnny – Richard Hawley.

Jenny was guilty of hitting Liz and leaving her for dead after she got behind the wheel of her car while drunk on Christmas Day.

But when Liz was rushed to hospital, Johnny took the blame and confessed that he was driving and couldn’t remember hitting Liz because he’d had a blackout brought on by his MS.

Liz discovered the truth when a desperate Jenny pleaded with her to drop the charges against Johnny, who Liz thought had tried to kill her on purpose.

But Liz wasn’t about to keep quiet and told the police that Jenny had been behind the hit and run. Both Johnny and Jenny were in trouble for perverting the course of justice, as well as Jenny’s hit and run charge.

However Liz had a change of heart of the day of the court case after being convinced by Gemma Winter that Jenny had suffered enough because Liz had slept with Johnny.

Gemma told Liz that if she didn’t go to court, the case would be thrown out.

Then she and her brother Paul helped to smuggle Liz to the airport while the judge declared Jenny and Johnny were free to leave.
