Coronation Street actress Jane Danson speaks out amid 'tough' Leanne and Oliver scenes

Coronation Street have been exploring yet another emotional avenue with Leanne Battersby’s (played by Jane Danson) son Oliver and his diagnosis with mitochondria disease, an incurable illness that impacts the cells that produce energy in our bodies. The youngster had been suffering mysterious seizures and it took a long time for the doctors to confirm what had been causing him to blackout and when they did, it wasn’t good news for his family.

The storyline has been extremely harrowing and thought-provoking for a lot of ITV viewers, as they watch Leanne struggle to come to terms with the fact she will lose her child.

Her grief has driven her to lash out at loved ones as she continues to spiral out of control.

After Monday night’s episodes, Jane Danson, who plays Leanne in the ITV soap, addressed viewers on Twitter, thanking them for their kind messages about the sensitive story.

“Once again thank you for the lovely messages – I haven’t seen tonights ep yet,”(sic) she wrote.

Earlier this year, Jane appeared on Loose Women to talk about the affects of mitochondria disease and how important it is to raise awareness.

Appearing via video chat, she said: “This storyline had a huge sense of responsibility, as this is someone’s story.

“Myself and Simon Gregson, who plays Steve, have had lots of messages from people going thought it. So we have a responsibility to get it right.

She added: “Not only the medical side of things but the human side too, which is obviously my responsibility.”
