CoppaFeel! founder Kris Hallenga on why schools should inform kids about how to check for breast cancer

I THINK back to my school days and wonder why I was never told to check my boobs.

I get that there were a million other things we needed to know – I understand that it wasn’t on the curriculum – but I still can’t shake off the frustration of missing out on such important information which may have changed my life drastically.

Kris gave a talk in Cornwall last week

CoppaFeel! now fills that gap and we’re often in schools speaking to all age groups about boobs.

I don’t give these talks so much now as I have stepped away from daily duties, plus our brilliant Boobettes are such pros.

However, my friend Nicola, a wonderful PE teacher, asked me to speak at her school in Cornwall last week as part of a whole week of boob-related activities and oodles of CoppaFeel! awareness.

By the time I was due to come in to speak she’d already spread the word, through assemblies, non-uniform days, “It’s A Knocker Out” games on the field and temporary tattoos.

Nicola organised all this on top of her already very demanding job. How cool is that?

So I visited the school last week, with my twin Maren for support, and was a tad worried about the pedestal Nicola had put me on. I didn’t want to let the kids down once they met me.

But I was wrong to worry.

The talk was over lunchtime, it was a sunny day, and yet both those factors didn’t stop a huge crowd gathering.

There were kids from all year groups and even some boys. I was SO chuffed to see boys! There was no giggling, no terrified faces, just acknowledgement that this was something they should start to think about.

Of course, I couldn’t help but think how young Kris would have really benefited from someone like me visiting her school.

I thought about the conversations that were going to be happening in many homes after school and how that too could have a big impact on mums, sisters and anyone with boobs.
