The US establishment does not “accept the legitimacy” of Donald Trump and his supporters are living under “constant assault”, claimed Nigel Farage. The Brexiteer MP also launched a scathing attack on President Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, branding him a “convicted liar” and “scumbag”. Speaking at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) summit in America, Mr Farage blasted: “On both sides of the pond the establishment, the big businesses behind it, simply refuse to accept the result. They do not accept the legitimacy of Trump, they do not accept the legitimacy of the Brexit referendum. The campaign against your President I have to say, at times, I think the whole thing is pretty disgusting.
“There can never have been a President who has been subject to more abuse and vitriol than Donald Trump. I thought this week it sunk to the depths because we saw a convicted liar, some would even say scumbag.
“Well let’s say scumbag shall we. I mean what on earth was Michael Cohen being given that platform for if it wasn’t yet again to see the denigration of your President.
“We have evermore fantastical conspiracy theories that somehow either the electorate was mesmerised, or the Russians pumped in money, and the endless Mueller investigation, and non-stop questioning of the legitimacy of your President.
“Sometimes if you are on this side of the argument, it feels like we are living under constant assault, and that is because we are living under constant assault.”
’s comments follow President Trump’s former lawyer, Mr Cohen, calling him a “racist, a conman and a cheat” during an explosive testimony before Congress on Wednesday 27 February.
Mr Cohen said the US President engaged in criminal conduct in the White House and behaved like a “mobster”.
Mr Cohen said that his “desire to win would have him work with anyone”, which could have included Russian President Vladimir Putin.
He said the US President directed him to breach campaign finance laws by paying hush money to women who had affairs with him – and paid him back while in office.
In his opening statement, the lawyer said: “Donald Trump is a man who ran for office to make his brand great, not to make our country great.
“He had no desire or intention to lead this nation – only to market himself and to build his wealth and power.”
Mr Cohen worked as Mr Trump’s lawyer and fixer for 12 years at The Trump Organization and once said he would “take a bullet for him”.
President Trump hit back at Mr Cohen in a press conference following the collapse of talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un during their summit on Hanoi, Vietnam.
He branded the “shameful” hearing in which Mr Cohen is giving evidence to a Democratic-led House of Representatives committee as “fake”.
The US President told reporters: “Having a fake hearing like that and having it in the middle of this very important summit is a really terrible thing.
“They could have made it two days later or next week and it would have been even better because they would have had more time.
“He lied a lot but is was very interesting because he didn’t lie about one thing – there was no collusion with Russia.”
Mr Trump added: “I was actually impressed he didn’t say there was collusion with Russia for this reason.
“I was quite impressed by that – he only went in 95 percent instead of 100 percent. There is no collusion and I call it the witch hunt – this should never happen to another president. This is so bad for our country.
“We’ll see what happens but it was pretty shameful.”
