AN “incest” family face a massive joint trial – seven years after cops found 40 adults and kids living in a squalid Australian backwater camp.
Eight members of the infamous “Colt” clan were arrested last year, accused of child abuse, incest and aggravated assault.
Betty Colt, 51, her sisters Rhonda and Martha, brother Charlie, Rhonda’s son Cliff and Betty’s sons Derek and Roderick and daughter, Raylene were detained after police swarmed their camp in Boorowa, New South Wales.
Today, seven of them have said they will waive a committal hearing in a bid to speed up legal proceedings.
The trial is expected to take place later this year.
Cops who discovered the remote property in 2012 were shocked to find kids sleeping in tents without water, toilets or electricity.
The children couldn’t even speak comprehensible English.
Genetic testing suggested 11 of the 12 children, aged between five and 15, had parents who were related.
The family had managed to evade raising alarm bells with social services by moving from state to state, until locals noticed some of the kids didn’t attend school.
Since then detectives have amassed DNA, forensic and witness evidence that led to the Colt inner circle being charged yesterday.
IN THE BLOOD
Among those snared was Charlie Colt, 45, who is accused more than a dozens offences including six counts of sexual intercourse with a child under 10.
Martha Colt, 38, was charged with perjury.
Derek Colt, 29, faces two charges of incest with a person under the age of 16 while Raylene Colt, 34, and 50-year-old Betty face perjury charges.
Two men and another woman were also arrested in the Northam area of Western Australia.
