HUMBLE runarounds such as the Citroen Saxo and Ford Focus are on their way to become classic cars, says a study.

Experts found makes and models stop being “bangers” and start to be assets after 18 years.

Minis head a top ten of potential classics, followed by Rover 75 and MG TF. Website Honest John Classics analysed MOT pass rates and found 2001 cars were worst at just 50.4 per cent.

Pass rates fall as cars get older but rise again after 18 years as owners start spending cash on restoring them.

Honest John editor Keith Moody said: “Eighteen is roughly the age a car stops becoming a banger and starts to become cherished.” Porsches or Ferraris are not on the list as they tend to be collectible whatever their age. 2001 Minis and Rover 75s are most in demand due to the British heritage, says the report.

Ford Focus are sixth and Citroen Saxo VTR ninth.
