Chelsea are apparently poised to move for Kai Havertz after Bayer Leverkusen missed out on the Champions League places, finishing fifth in the table behind Borussia Monchengladbach.

Frank Lampard has captured two of his targets as Ajax ace Hakim Ziyech and RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner officially became Chelsea players today.

The Blues are not done bolstering their ranks as another attacker is sought after because Pedro and Willian are set to leave on free transfers when their contracts expire.

Chelsea have been keeping a close eye on Havertz and he may be available at a discounted price because of Leverkusen’s final league positioning.

The German side were initially demanding £90million for the 21-year-old as they were in a strong position to keep hold of their star.

But if the versatile midfielder wants to play at the highest level, ie. Champions League football, he will need to move on.

The Telegraph claim Chelsea are poised to make an opening bid for Havertz as Lampard continues to act decisively in the market.

Last weekend the Blues boss revealed that “no bids have gone in” for the Germany international but his wry smile may have hinted something was around the corner.

Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller wants to keep Havertz at the BayArena but acknowledges it may be difficult.

“We haven’t given up hope that he’ll stay with us,” he said.

“Neither are we. I certainly don’t have the impression that this will be his last game for the club.

“He is still under contract with us and I have to assume that he will be with us next season too.

“That will include the German Cup final next month and the next Europa League game against Rangers in August.

“Of course, that’s all dependent on nothing happening before then.”
