Malek has been very vocal in his love for Freddie Mercury and the huge challenges and rewards of taking on the role. He submerged himself into his character and studied the way the Queen icon walked, talked, moved, smiled and strutted. The whole journey has not only lead to worldwide recognition after the movie became an unexpectedly enormous box office smash, but it has also started to fill the actor’s trophy cabinet with a new deluge of awards to add to his Mr Robot gongs. It has also had an enormous added bonus which Malek revealed this week.
Speaking on the red carpet at the BAFTAS the actor opened up about his experiences and also dropped some huge news that will make British fans very happy.
Malek said: “I’ve been all over the world promoting it. At a screening in Japan, everyone was singing every word to every song at Live Aid. The world claims him, he belongs to everyone.”
But Freddie’s heart and home were here in the UK and now Malek is following in his footsteps.
He said: “I got to go from Abbey Road studios to AIR studies to see all of London and fall in love with it. I fell in love with it. To the point where I’m now looking for a place to live here.”
Malek is already an honorary Brit after bringing one of the nation’s greatest (and much-missed) heroes back to life – but not only for that reason.
He is also, it should be noted, dating his Bohemian Rhapsody co-star, Lucy Boynton.
The UK actress played Freddie’s long-term love, Mary Austin, on screen, and life has imitated art. The pair have been inseparable during the movie’s whirlwind promotional tour and subsequent awards season victory lap.
Even though their relationship ended, Freddie and Mary remained very close until the end of his life.
He referred to her as his common-law wife and left his incredible 28-room Georgian mansion in Kensington to her.
